Oat groats can be used in numerous ways including:
- rolling for oatmeal
- grinding for flour
- used whole for breakfast or in soups
- cracked for steel-cut oats
Oat groats are rich in protein, fiber, some B vitamins, along with numerous minerals, and are especially high in manganese.
Groat is the term used to describe an oat kernel that has the inedible hull removed, but no further processing has been done. It is the whole grain kernel that hasn’t been rolled, cut, ground, heated or processed in any way. The groat contains all 3 parts of the oat including the germ, the endosperm and the bran. Therefore, the groat is the only way to consume oats as a whole food.
